Anyone coming to visit Windsor will discover a town with royal connections and an imposing stone fortress. Founded in Norman times by William the Conqueror, Windsor Castle acts as a Royal residence for the Queen and has been home to 39 monarchs during its illustrious history. The State Apartments are a sight to behold, while the Changing of the Guard ceremony on selected days is a stunning spectacle of British pageantry. Look out for the Royal Standard flying from the Castle’s Round Tower too, as it’s a sign the Queen is in residence. Hunt for souvenirs in the main Windsor shopping areas of Peascod Street, Windsor Royal Station and King Edward Court, get your teeth into its delectable food scene, or delve into the brick world of LEGOLAND Windsor, a theme park with rides and attractions for all the family.

Where is Windsor?

Located at the eastern end of Berkshire, Windsor is less than 10 miles from London Heathrow Airport. Around a 15 minute drive from Windsor, the airport has flights to and from more than 350 destinations worldwide. You can also drive from London Gatwick Airport to Windsor in under an hour and a direct bus serves the town from London Victoria.

Getting around Windsor

The royal town of Windsor can be accessed from locations across Britain. London to Windsor train services take around 55 minutes from London Waterloo, or visitors can travel from London Paddington and change at Slough. Windsor is best explored on foot and the main Windsor shopping areas are all pedestrianized, while a reliable public transport network serves the town and the surrounding area.

BY FOOT

Set in the shadows of the 11th century Windsor Castle, the town centre is best explored on foot. You can walk from Eton and the banks of the River Thames through the town to The Long Walk and the expanse of Windsor Great Park in as little as 20 minutes.

BY BUS

First Bus and Courtney Buses provide regular services in Windsor to surrounding towns including Slough, Maidenhead and Heathrow Airport. Both companies accept contactless and cash payments, helping to make your travel fast and convenient. Windsor also operates a Park and Ride service from several locations, including LEGOLAND Windsor.

BY TAXI

You’ll find a taxi rank on Thames Street in front of Windsor Castle, while the town is also served by an array of taxi and private hire firms, making it easy to get around.
