Hadrian's Wall, England

HADRIAN'S WALL - AT A GLANCE

  • A World Heritage Site, it stretches 73 miles across the far north of England from the banks of the River Tyne near the North Sea to the Solway Firth on the Irish Sea.

  • The Roman fortification dates back to the reign of Emperor Hadrian in 122 AD. You can see what remains of the ancient settlements and forts walking the Hadrian’s Wall Path, which runs 84 miles from coast to coast.

  • Along the way you’ll discover fascinating border towns and villages, such as the picturesque market town of Brampton.

  • Learn about the lawless bands of ‘Reivers’ who once stalked the borders in the Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery in the city of Carlisle.

  • You may like to combine your visit to Hadrian’s Wall with a trip to Cumbria’s picturesque Lake District, due its close proximity.

  • Pick up the trail in Newcastle, which is 1 hour 30 minutes south of Edinburgh by train.
