Despite the grand architecture, Durham doesn’t really feel like a city - in a good way.
Maybe you recognise it from Downton Abbey, Victoria or the Harry Potter films? The city’s characterful streets make the perfect backdrop for costume dramas.
First stop: Durham Cathedral. This incredible Norman place of worship has been at the heart of the city since the 11th century, and makes up Durham UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Durham Castle and the buildings between.
But that’s not all to entice history lovers. As well as the city’s sights, nearby not-to-be-missed attractions include Beamish, an immense living history museum with actual street set-ups, and Auckland Castle.
Make time to explore the beautiful parks, gardens and natural wonders of the region too. Stretch your legs on a walking tour round the city, or go on a longer hike in the North Pennines or along the Durham Heritage Coast.
You can get to Durham surprisingly quickly from London. It’s around a 3-hour direct train journey from London’s Kings Cross Station.
